“Integrated MACT Compliance Planning”
Sharon Sjostrom, Chief Technology Officer
Michael Durham,  C. Jean Bustard

Development of a MACT compliance strategy is critical as industry works its way through the evolving EPA regulation.
Sharon Sjostrom stresses that EGU owners and operators should review likely MACT compliance scenarios now due to tight timeframes for large capital decisions and potential resource constraints.  She provided key tools for the planning process by  reviewing indicators from the draft industrial boiler MACT, the control levels achieved by the best performers in the industry during EPA’s recent Information Collection Request, and potential complicating factors from other current/near-term emissions regulations.  The final EGU MACT is expected to be released in November 2011 with only three years to be in compliance.

Congress Approves One-Year Extension for Installing Section 45 Refined Coal Systems

ADA’s  CyClean:  The Mercury Solution for Cyclone Boilers

The Tax Extenders Bill passed by Congress in December allows ADA to provide its Refined Coal systems at no cost to power generators through our consolidated subsidiary, Clean Coal Solutions, LLC.  This patented technology, CyClean, enables cyclone boiler operators to meet MACT emission levels for mercury while improving the combustion of Powder River Basin (PRB) coal in cyclone boilers.   CyClean is  an additive that improves system operations, increases fuel flexibility, decreases fuel costs and reduces emissions of nitrogen oxides and mercury.

Two CyClean systems have been operating for eight months at two power plants, producing Refined Coal for four cyclone boilers firing PRB coal.  With this extension, ADA can offer this effective mercury control technology to customers to achieve compliance with MACT regulations for the next ten years if the equipment is installed this year.  The CyClean systems are the only Section 45 Refined Coal technology on the market today that meets Section 45 IRS emissions reductions using full-scale CEMs demonstrations.  A limited number of facilities are currently being fabricated and will be available in the next few months for demonstration.
